A link can be deceptive and take you somewhere different from what you expect. The most common form of fraud on the internet involves links to a page that looks legitimate but is not. When you try to log in to the fake page, you send your login details to the criminals who created the site.
Beware of fake websites
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to determine whether a website is genuine or fake. Cybercriminals can imitate and forge a website, making it difficult for users to tell the difference.
The easiest way to avoid link fraud is to open a browser such as Safari or Chrome and manually type in the web address, e.g., www.MitID.dk. By entering the address yourself, you can safely reach the site you intend to visit.
Make it a habit to check the website address in the address bar.
- Genuine addresses look like this: www.MitID.dk and DinBank.MitID.dk
- Fake addresses might look like this: mitid.dk.bank.com and mitid.com.login/mitid.dk
If you are unsure about a website, it is a good idea to contact MitID support or ask a trusted friend or family member.
