New security features in the MitID app
MitID is now implementing a new security check to prevent fraudsters from duplicating a user's MitID app.
From now on, the app will perform a proximity check when a user wishes to transfer their MitID to a new phone or tablet. This ensures that the two devices are close to each other during the transfer process.
The proximity check is designed to protect against a specific type of fraud where cybercriminals attempt to trick users into sharing their QR code, allowing the fraudsters to activate a MitID app on their own device via app-to-app copying.
The proximity check uses Bluetooth on iPhones, and Bluetooth and Location Services on Android devices. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on both Apple and Android. On older Android devices (older than Android 12) location services must be enabled as well. Both Bluetooth and location services are only used during the proximity check, which happens during an app-to-app copy.
As of today, it is also no longer possible to take screenshots or share the screen while using the MitID app. Both of these security measures make it more difficult for fraudsters to carry out attacks where users are deceived into providing QR codes.
Improved passport scanning in the MitID app
The new update also includes enhancements to user experience. When activating the MitID app via passport scanning, it can now be done regardless of whether the phone or tablet is held in a horizontal or vertical position. Additionally, users can now view video tutorials within the app in both orientations.
Option to mute sound in the MitID app
It is now possible to keep sound enabled on your phone or tablet while having the MitID app muted. This can be adjusted by navigating to the app’s menu, selecting 'App Settings', and then choosing 'Sound'.
