Approve with QR code or one-time passcode in the MitID app

When you use a computer or tablet – and need to approve with the MitID app installed on your phone – you must scan a QR code or enter a one-time passcode. QR codes and one-time passcodes help ensure that it is you who are approving with MitID. If you have difficulties using QR codes and one-time passcodes, this page can help you.

When you scan a QR code during an approval, it helps ensure that you are the person at the screen where the approval happens. This helps make MitID more secure for you.

One-time passcodes are an alternative to QR codes, which also helps ensure that it is you at the screen where the log on is attempted. We recommend that you use QR codes, if possible, when you approve with MitID.

QR codes are machine-generated codes with information that your phone can read. When you scan a QR code during an approval, it helps ensure that you are the person at the screen where the approval happens. This helps make MitID more secure for you.

How to approve with QR codes

When you must scan a QR code, you need to use your MitID app.

If you use a computer and need to approve with the MitID app, you must first log on to the page on the computer that you wish to access – e.g., borger.dk or your online bank.

  • Enter your MitID user ID. Click Continue.
  • Open your MitID app on your phone and enter your pin code (or use fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID, if you use that).
  • The QR code will now be shown on the computer screen.
  • Scan the QR code by holding your MitID app in front of the computer, with the phone’s screen towards you, so you can use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code.
  • Once the code is scanned and approved, you need to swipe right to approve. Remember to only swipe after reading what you are approving. Only approve if it matches what you are doing, and if you started the approval process yourself.

If you use a tablet and need to approve with the MitID app, you must first log on to the page on the tablet that you wish to access – e.g., borger.dk or your online bank.

  • Open your MitID app on your phone and enter your pin code (or use facial recognition or fingerprint scan, if you use either of these).
  • The QR code will now be shown on the tablet.
  • Scan the QR code by holding your MitID app in front of the tablet, with the phone’s screen towards you, so you can use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code.
  • Once the code is scanned and approved, you need to swipe right to approve. Remember to only swipe after reading what you are approving. Only approve if it matches what you are doing, and if you started the approval process yourself.

Does scanning the QR code fail?

If you can see the QR code, but not scan it with the MitID app, you can try the following:

  • If you receive a pop-up on the phone that asks you to allow access to the camera, press OK.
  • Turn up the brightness on the screen showing the QR code.
  • Keep the phone steady – e.g., by resting it on something while you scan.
  • Make sure that the phone camera is working, is clean, and free from scratches.
  • Make sure that the mouse cursor is not covering part of the QR code if you are using a computer.

If you cannot see a QR code, it might be because the page you are trying to log on to has been reloaded. If this is the case, cancel the approval in your app, and try again.

One-time passcodes are an alternative to QR codes, which also helps ensure that it is you at the screen where the log on is attempted. We recommend that you use QR codes, if possible, when you approve with MitID.

If you have a visual or motor impairment, or if the camera on your phone is broken, there is an alternative: using one-time passcodes. Entering one-time passcodes also help increase your security, since – in order to approve with MitID – you need to enter a one-time passcode that shows up on the screen where you are sitting. The one-time passcode is four digits that will be shown on the screen where you are logging on.

How to change to one-time passcodes

There are two ways to change to approving with one-time passcodes in the MitID app.

  • By entering the menu in the app or
  • By changing while you are using the app

Be aware that there will be a 24 hours waiting period in both cases. This is because you are changing a personal setting for the app, which takes 24 hours to change for security reasons.

Change in the app menu

  1. Enter the MitID app menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Press App settings
  3. Press QR- or one-time password code
  4. Read the information and press Next
  5. Enter your pin code (or use fingerprint/Touch ID/Face ID, if you use either of these).
  6. Select One-time password code on the screen 'How do you want to approve?'. Press Next.
  7. Select I want to change to one-time password code on the screen 'You are about to change how you approve with MitID'. Press Begin change.
  8. Now you must wait 24 hours before you can confirm the change, and you can use one-time passcodes. You will receive a message when the 24 hours have passed on your chosen notification channel, e.g., the app. You can press Close and wait, if you like.
  9. Open the MitID app again after the 24 hours have passed. On the screen 'Confirm that you want to approve using one-time passcodes from now on', you must press Confirm change.
  10. You have now completed the change to approving with one-time passcodes. Press OK.

Change while using the app

You can also change to using one-time passcodes while you are using the app and see the screen “New way to approve in the MitID app”.

  1. Press Accessibility in the centre of the screen 'New way to approve in the MitID app'.
  2. Press Next on the screen 'Accessibility'.

Now follow steps 5-8 in the above guide.

You can change back to using QR codes in the same way: by entering the MitID app menu. This change does not require you to wait 24 hours to complete it.
